Getting the most from your battery

The battery works in the background and supports your home, and you can use power as normal.

Your bill

The power you’ve used at your two rates, the daily charge, and your share of what the battery earned as its own credit.

Your hot water

The electrician checks how your hot water is wired. If it is not already, your cylinder goes on a controlled circuit, so it heats when power costs less. It does not change how much hot water you have or when you can use it.

Optional habits

You do not need to change how you live. If you want your share to go further, move the big draws out of the early evening so the battery has more to sell. In a power cut we text you, and keeping the dryer, the oven and heaters off keeps your lights on for longer.

The dryer

The heaviest movable load in most houses. A load that starts at nine instead of six leaves the battery more to sell.

The dishwasher

Most machines made in the last decade have a delay timer.

Charging an electric car

If you have one, the charger is a controlled load on its own circuit, like your hot water, so it never draws on the battery.

Heating the house early

Bringing rooms up to temperature before five, rather than heating hard through the expensive evening hours, uses the same power at a better hour.

Cooking

Cook when you want to.

Your share over time

It steps up in year four and again from year five.

Solar

In many cases existing panels and the battery work together. You do not need solar to join.
